Fly High and Unknown won their respective U14 and U17 divisions of the 2011 Marianas Kids Cup last Sunday on the sand courts of Fiesta Resort & Spa.
Over 120 participants turned out to compete in what traditionally serves as the final event of the yearly Marianas Cup Beach Volleyball Festival.
The John Nekaifes-coached Fly High is made up of A.J. Castro, Lily Williams, Ryan Ichihara, Wilton Laniyo, and Damart Teregeyo.
The team started the tourney by winning its first four games before topping How I Set Your Mother in the finals.
How I Set Your Mother actually took an early 4-3 lead, but began to lag after both teams became knotted at 7-all. From there Fly High jumped ahead, 18-10, and held on for the victory, 21-14. Honorable mention goes out to U17's Serves You Right, who finished third place.
In the seven-player U14 division, runner-up Boom-Boom-Pow defeated Unknown, 21-19, in the first finals match to force a tiebreaker set for all the marbles, but Unknown recovered and took the top prize, 15-10, in the clutch.
Team Unknown consists of Jehn Joyner, Tommy Choi, Andrew Johnson, Kaisei Toda, and Seoung Hyun Lee. It is coached by Beth Johnson and Russ Quinn.
Girly Girls rounded out the third spot after falling to Boom-Boom-Pow, 13-15, in the U14 semifinals.
The rest of the division was made up of fourth-ranked All-Stars, fifth place Mam-Sir, We Will Block You, and Up And Coming.
The Top 3 finishers in each division were awarded medals and various prize packages provided by sponsors Mikasa, Docomo Pacific, Hollywood Theaters, and Big Dipper Ice Cream.
Prizes included volleyballs, Smile Marianas T-shirts, cellular phones, ice cream coupons, movie passes, as well as gift cards from National Office Supply and Java Joe's.
Northern Marianas Islands Volleyball Association organized the event. Visit www.nmivolleyball.org for more details and photos.
