Fly High, Unknown rule Kids Cup

TEAMS Fly High and Unknown ruled the sands of Fiesta Resort and Spa during Sunday’s 4th Marianas Kids Cup, part of the 19th Annual Beach Volleyball Festival.

CruzThe Fly Highs – whose core players also take part in Marianas High School’s Rocball league – defeated How I Set Your Mother in the 17-and-under division’s finals, 21-14. They took the top seed, beating 15 other teams.

How I Set Your Mother fell to Fly High, 21-17 in the quarter finals and recovered from the losers’ bracket. They tamed the Battle Monkeys via forfeit, conquered team Irresistible, 15-11, and crushed Serves You Right, 15-4 to advance to from the semifinals.

Team Fly High, coached by John Nekaifes, included AJ Castro, Lily Williams, Damart Teregeyo, Wilton Laniyo, and Ryan Ichihara. The dominant five-man crew ousted Serves You Right from the winners’ bracket during quarterfinals, and defeated the Noobs (15-7) and Kolan Mannge (15-7).

The fourth seeded How I Set Your Mother – taking second place – included Zoe Jewell, Amber Roberts, Josh Borja, and Kai Staal. Serves You Right, winning third place, was composed of Clay and Emma McCullough-Stearns, Andy Nutting, Josie Santos, and Celine Camacho.

Meanwhile, team Unknown’s Jehn Joyner, Tommy Choi, Andrew Johnson, Kaisei Toda, and Seoung Hyun Lee dominated the 14U category. The Boom Boom Pows, who lost to them in the semis, returned from the losers’ bracket with a 15-13 win over Girly Girl. They came up short again, falling 15-10 in the championship round and settled for second place. Team Boom Boom Pow – coached by Michelle Masga – included Savannah Lyn Delos Santos, Masami Sato, Michael and Jun Fidelino, John Masga.

Coming in third place, the Girly Girls were composed of Whispering Palms School’s Gabrielle Race, Minori Yoshida, Brianna Fajardo, Nicole Arenovski, and Jennifer Tan.

Both 17U and 14U divisions played in a 4-vs-4 format, with at least one female on the court at all times. Pool play determined each team’s seed in the double elimination bracket.
