Australia and Papua New Guinea's men's teams progressed to the next round of the AVC Continental Beach Volleyball Cup

Saipan, Northern Marianas Island, March 7, 2011 – Australia and Papua New Guinea's men's teams triumphed in the Oceanian sub-zonal Pool A tournament of the AVC Continental Beach Volleyball Cup on Sunday.

Australia topped the men's division with flawless wins, beating Papua New Guinea, Northern Marianas Island and Guam all by the same 4-0 scoreline in the three-day round-robin event at the Pacific Islands Club.

Papua New Guinea finished second with a record of two wins and one defeat, followed by Guam (1-3) and the winless Northern Marianas Island.

The Northern Marianas were represented by the duos of Tyce Mister and Chris Nelson, and Clay McCullough-Stearns and Andy Nutting, who met some stiff competition over the weekend. Each team managed to win a pair of matches during the competition, but it was not enough to secure victory.

Australia's dominant squad was composed of Samuel Boehm, Joshua Slack, Isaac Kapa, Christopher McHugh, Louise Baldwin, Tamsin Hinchley, Becchara Palmer, and Alice Rohkamper.

Papua New Guinea included Alice Ito, Richard Kilarupa, Moha Mea, Jossie Dick, Gary Udiah, and Richard Batari.

The sub zonal phase marks the start of the Oceania qualifying process that leads ultimately to the 2012 London Olympic Games. The tournament is broken down into subzone, zone, and continent finals.

In the women's division, Australia went undefeated to top the four-team field. The Northern Marianas Island finished second after winning a golden set against Papua New Guinea.

Pool B of the Sub Zonal Tournament will be held in Vanuatu from May 17-21 with the hosts being joined by teams from Fiji, Tuvalu, and the Solomon Islands. Pool C will then take place in Apia, Samoa from May 25-27 and will feature American Samoa, the Cook Islands, New Zealand and Tonga in addition to the home side.

This weekend's Sub Zonal Tournament started on Friday and ended on Sunday with an exhibition match between the Australia players.
